The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James D. Honea (ASN: 38481385), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Butgenbach, Belgium, on 22 December 1944. When his company’s defenses were attacked by enemy armor and infantry, Private Honea, despite an intense cannon, machine-gun, and small arms barrage, fearlessly remained at his post and directed accurate and heavy rifle fire upon the hostile troops. Although his position was overrun in the fierce assault, he courageously continued firing and closed aggressively with the foe. As a result of his gallant actions, Private Honea has been reported missing in action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
