Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 56 (March 3, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John Susnik (ASN: 0-360592), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 15 August 1952, Private Susnik was the Platoon Runner of the second platoon of Company I when they launched an attack against strongly fortified enemy positions near Chiro-dong, Korea. During the ensuing battle, the platoon was subjected to intense enemy automatic weapons and hand grenade fire and became separated from the other platoons of the assault group. The original plan had called for the first platoon to evacuate their wounded through the second platoon area but this was now impossible since the second platoon area was being subjected to an intense hail of small arms and grenade fire making evacuation impossible. Realizing that the first platoon must be warned and fully aware of the dangers he faced, Private Susnik left the comparative safety of his position, exposed himself to the enemy fire, and successfully informed the first platoon of the existing situation. While crossing the open terrain between the two platoons, he saw and carried a wounded comrade, who was lying exposed to hostile fire, to a position of comparative safety. Private Susnik’s heroism and outstanding devotion to duty and to his comrades reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
