Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 15 (April 7, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Roland R. Hintz (ASN: 36220118), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. While under constant enemy fire, Private Hintz crawled to the side of a seriously wounded soldier and, with the assistance of other members of his litter squad, rendered first aid. Later, Private Hintz assisted in successfully evacuating this soldier across terrain constantly exposed to the direct fire of enemy guns. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
