The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles F. Hill (ASN: 6147167), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Ferme Combier, Algeria, 9 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, while driving a 75-mm. self-propelled howitzer, Sergeant Hill, heedless of personal danger in the face of heavy enemy fire, deliberately exposed himself to repair a .50 caliber machine gun which had jammed and would not fire. Having accomplished this, he continued to his battalion’s position and led his section gallantly until wounded by enemy shell fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
