The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Robert M. Hewitt (ASN: 21002122), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. Although constantly under enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire, Sergeant Hewitt worked his way to a point from which he could throw hand grenades into enemy positions. When his supply of hand grenades became exhausted, he continued harassing the enemy by throwing rifle grenades and other missiles. Sergeant Hewitt’s actions materially contributed to his company’s success in seizing and holding its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
