The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Corporal] John W. Hewitt (ASN: 12005054), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. When the enemy subjected his anti-tank gun to intense fire and was apparently determined to destroy the gun and its crew, Sergeant Hewitt, by his coolness and intrepidity under fire, reassured and inspired his men to remain at their posts. He fearlessly and accurately directed the firing of this piece until the enemy was compelled to withdraw. Staff Sergeant Hewitt’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
