Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 5 (February 9, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jake C. Hodges, Jr. (ASN: 0-444676), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When besieging enemy forces compelled his organization to seek a more tenable position, Lieutenant Hodges held his ground and established an observation post. Although subjected to enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire, he obtained vital information which enable his battalion to occupy a strategic position. First Lieutenant Hodges’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
