Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 33 (December 7, 1942)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Walter C. Harshberger (ASN: 33146273), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at La Macta, Algeria, 10 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, Private Harshberger, while suffering from broken ribs, became separated from his company. He attached himself to Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment; organized a group of unattached men into a squad; and continually exposing himself to enemy fire, secured valuable information concerning enemy positions. His courage and initiative under fire inspired the men of Company B. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
