Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 33 (December 7, 1942)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Everett H. Hinman (ASN: 6665178), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Djebel Murdjadjo, Algeria, 9 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, Private Hinman, with utter disregard of his personal safety, worked his way forward by careful maneuvering, and wiped out an enemy machine gun nest. This act enabled his platoon to continue the attack. His courage was an inspiration to the other members of his unit. Private Hinman’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
