    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [Lieutenant] Charles McFadden Young (NSN: 0-123504), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. DRUM (SS-228), during the ELEVENTH War Patrol of that vessel in enemy Japanese-controlled waters, from 9 September to 8 November 1944. Displaying exceptional judgment and a thorough knowledge of attack problems, Lieutenant Commander Young assisted his Commanding Officer in conducting attacks which resulted in the sinking of hostile shipping totaling over 25,000 tons and the damaging of an additional 10,000 tons. His perseverance, courage and devotion to duty were inspiring to the officers and men of the DRUM and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
