(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant (MC), [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] Edward M. Wurzel, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Medical Officer during action against numerically superior enemy Japanese forces near Koi-ari, Bougainville, Island, British Solomon Islands, on 29 November 1943. Valiantly risking his life in almost continuous Japanese fire from machine guns, mortars and rifles, Lieutenant Wurzel worked tirelessly under the most perilous conditions to attend the dying and wounded. His courageous fortitude and outstanding skill while serving the men under his professional care were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
