The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Thomas Michael Wolverton (NSN: 0-60559), United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Damage Control Officer during the operations of United States Naval Forces in the action against Japanese Naval Forces off Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the night of 11 – 12 October 1942. As Damage Control Officer, during and after the action, he acted quickly and efficiently to control the damage, fighting the fires, and maintaining the stability of the ship. The excellent performance of the Repair Parties demonstrates the thoroughness of his training and reflects directly upon the ability of this officer. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
