The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Gunner’s Mate First Class James S. Hunter, United States Navy, for heroism while serving aboard U.S.S. SCHENECTADY (LST-1185) anchored near Pohang, Korea. While working on the ship’s mess decks as Mess Deck Master at Arms on the morning of 10 July 1977, Petty Officer Hunter heard a cry of mortal anguish coming from the serving line area. Turning quickly, he saw a Marine run into the mess decks bleeding profusely from a severe stab wound. The victim was closely followed by his assailant, who still held the bloody butcher knife with which he had stabbed the victim. With complete disregard for his own personal safety and fully aware of the danger involved, Petty Officer Hunter grabbed the aroused assailant from behind, forced him to the deck, and quickly disarmed him. His prompt, courageous, and forthright actions in the face of great personal risk undoubtedly prevented further attacks on the victim and possible injury to numerous other bystanders in the area. Petty Officer Hunter’s distinctive and courageous act of heroism reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
