Action Date:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Lindsey Williamson (NSN: 0-71428), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. KEARNEY (DD-432) during the amphibious invasion of Southern France in August 1944. Commander Williamson, whose ship was assigned to screen capital gun fire support ships in the Saint Mandrier-Giens area, carried out effective bombardment of targets of opportunity on numerous occasions, augmenting the gunfire of the heavier units on enemy coastal installations. His fearless and determined conduct of these missions materially assisted in the reduction of the defenses commanding the approaches to the vital port of Toulon. Throughout this phase of the assault, he repeatedly interposed his ship between the larger vessels and well directed and sustained fire from hostile shore artillery to lay protective smoke screens around the heavier bombardment units. This, together with his own accurate and vigorous fire, contributed materially to the support rendered by these units in assisting the westward advance of the Allied Armies and their early occupation of the port of Toulon. The exceptional courage, aggressive leadership under fire, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Commander Williamson were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
