The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Jack Bercaw Williams (NSN: 0-70098/1100), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BENSON (DD-421), in action against enemy forces in the Western Mediterranean on the night of 11 May 1944. Skillfully maneuvering his ship to interpose the BENSON between a friendly convoy and attacking enemy torpedo planes, Commander Williams directed a masterful defense and laid down an effective smoke screen to obscure the vessels from the hostile planes. By his prompt, heroic actions and superb control, he was instrumental in destroying two enemy planes and in preventing possible damage to our surface forces. His professional skill, initiative and steadfast devotion to duty reflect great credit upon Commander Williams and the United States Naval Service.
