The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander George Harris Whiting (NSN: 0-77072), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Executive Officer of the U.S.S. GRENADIER (SS-210) during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters west of the Malay Peninsula from 21 to 23 April 1943, and as a Prisoner of War in a Japanese military prison camp from 25 April 1943 to 2 September 1945. Before further enemy countermeasures forced him to abandon ship, Commander Whiting rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in fighting for twenty-two hours to save his doomed vessel. As a result of his excellent leadership and coolness under fire, he contributed greatly to the saving of all members of the crew. Held in a special Japanese Naval Interrogation Camp, he steadfastly withstood all persecution to force him to divulge military information. By his outstanding courage during his two years and five months of confinement, Commander Whiting served as an inspiration to others and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
