The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant (MC) Russell H. Walker, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity on 14 October 1942 while serving as a Corpsman attached to the FIRST Marine Division at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Lieutenant Walker left his place of safety and administered emergency treatment to a member of the Marine Corps who had sustained a compound fracture when struck by shell fragments while Guadalcanal was under heavy bombardment by hostile naval aircraft. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
