The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Frederick Birchfield Tucker (NSN: 0-82578), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer and Navigator of the U.S.S. HAWKBILL (SS-366), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the SECOND War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters from 15 November 1944 to 5 January 1945. Efficiently performing his various duties during this war patrol, Lieutenant Commander Tucker rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting attacks against enemy shipping, thereby contributing materially to the success of his ship in sinking one Japanese destroyer and one high-speed transport by torpedo fire in addition to one sea truck by gunfire, totaling 2,300 tons. His professional skill and leadership throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
