The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Joseph A. Tammany, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Corpsman attached to the SECOND Marine Division at Guadalcanal on 22 January 1943. Attached to a machine gun platoon, he exposed himself to enemy machine gun and sniper fire to assist and remove from danger, wounded men of his and other units, with utter disregard for his own safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
