The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Archibald Stone, Jr. (NSN: 0-73516), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy during the sinking of the U.S.S. PECOS (AO-6) on 1 March 1942. By his courage, determination, and leadership he kept the 3-inch anti-aircraft guns firing throughout the action at their best. When the crew of the Number 6 gun had been reduced by casualties below the number necessary to man it, although himself wounded in the face by bomb fragments, he pointed the gun throughout the remainder of the action. His gallantry and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
