The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Staff Sergeant Stanley J. Wawrzyniak (MCSN: 636571), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces near Hoegol, Korea, on 28 May 1951. On that date, Sergeant Wawrzyniak voluntarily accompanied a rifle platoon in an assault against a well-defended enemy position. Without regard for his personal welfare and under heavy enemy fire, he moved forward shouting words of encouragement to the men as they advanced against the hail of enemy mortar and small arms fire to gain the enemy position. Although painfully wounded, Sergeant Wawrzyniak refused first aid in order that he might remain to supervise the evacuation of the wounded. His close supervision resulted in the successful evacuation of all wounded personnel to a position of relative safety. The initiative and aggressiveness displayed by Sergeant Wawrzyniak reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
