The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Wallace Andrew Sherrill (Schmid), (NSN: 0-72271), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in operations against the enemy in an attack on the Battleship NAGATO, at Yokosuka Naval Base, 18 July 1945. As Pilot of a Carrier Based Fighter Plane, he led his Task Group against the enemy, himself diving on an anti-aircraft ship containing a heavy concentration of anti-aircraft guns, and so located as to be a dangerous hazard to the success of the attack. Dropping his bomb in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire he obtained a direct hit, silencing the ship’s guns, and thereby aiding immeasurably the Task Groups attacking after his dive. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
