(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Chief Fire Controlman Jack Walter Shelton, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving on board a United States Navy warship, in the action against Japanese naval forces in the Solomon Islands area on the night of 12 – 13 November 1942. Chief Fire Controller Shelton remained at his battle station and coolly and efficiently performed his duties as range-finder operator, although painfully wounded by shrapnel. He continued to identify silhouettes as they appeared and gave target angles, speeds and ranges during the height of the battle. Chief Fire Controlman Shelton’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
