The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander George Field Sharp (NSN: 0-82685), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. SEA OWL (SS-405), during the FIRST War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-controlled waters of the Pacific Ocean Area from 19 November 1944 to 15 January 1945. His excellent judgment and cool handling of fire control contributed materially to the success of attacks which resulted in sinking enemy ships. As Executive Officer he was instrumental in building up the organization which enabled his ship to inflict damage upon the enemy in her initial encounters. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the Officers and men in his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
