The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Chief Pharmacist’s Mate Jack Milton Savage (NSN: 6570653), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving at his post of duty aboard the Cruiser U.S.S. BIRMINGHAM (CL-62) on 24 October 1944. Although mortally wounded by the explosion of magazines on a United States aircraft carrier, while his ship was going alongside to fight fires caused by an enemy bomb, he refused medical care for himself and instructed others in the administration of first aid to the wounded. His courage, disregard of pain, and concern for the welfare of others before his own was an inspiration and example to all. His utter disregard for his own safety was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
