The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Glenn Edward Roderick (NSN: 6152198), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the FOURTH Marine Division in Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 9 July 1944. As a member of the Hospital Section of a Medical Company, he volunteered for an assignment with a combat group. While with this group, he volunteered to rescue a wounded Marine. Although a hospital Corpsman had been severely wounded in a second desperate attempt to rescue the injured Marine from the exposed area where he had fallen, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Roderick, through his own resourcefulness and with utter disregard for his own personal safety, daringly crawled forward under a hail of enemy fire to administer medical aid. Although severely wounded himself, he continued administering treatment and remained with the injured man until the area was cleared and evacuation of the injured man was possible. His great personal valor and unswerving loyalty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
