The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Cassius Douglas Rhymes, Jr. (NSN: 0-74884), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. CHUB (SS-329), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the FIRST War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-controlled waters in the South China and Java Sea Areas from 13 February to 18 April 1945. Undaunted by the possibility of attack from a Japanese destroyer standing out in the harbor six miles away, Commander Rhymes skillfully maneuvered his ship into position to rescue three Army aviators in waters mined by Allied powers and immediately adjacent to waters known to be mined by the enemy. When Japanese aircraft broke through the air cover and made two strafing attacks, he cleared all personnel from the bridge of his ship and, at the risk of his life, continued his efforts until he had completed the rescue of the three men. His determination, cool courage and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
