Daniel Sickles served in New York State Assembly in 1847 and New York State Senate from 1856-57. From 1857 until the beginning of the Civil War (1861) he represented the NY 3d Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. After the war and a distinguished military career, he served as US Congressman from New York’s 10th District from 1893-95. From 1869 to 1874 General Sickles served as the US Minister to Spain.
