The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Forrest Marion Price (NSN: 0-73545), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while acting as Assistant Gunnery Officer of a United States Ship during the engagement with Japanese naval forces near Savo Island on the night of 30 November 1942. When his ship was seriously damaged and on fire, Lieutenant Price personally took charge of a detail attempting to jettison ammunition located in close proximity to the fire. He then courageously assisted in fighting fire in the vicinity of exploding ammunition, and when the ship was finally abandoned he was instrumental in aiding three ship mates, who were unable to swim, to a place of safety. His gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
