    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Albert Royal Olsen (NSN: 0-81348), United States Navy, for outstanding gallantry and intrepidity in action in the line of his profession as Navigator of the Destroyer U.S.S. DUNLAP (DD-384), who prior to and during the action against a Japanese force in Vella Gulf, Solomon Islands, on the night of 6 – 7 August 1943, supplied information which greatly assisted the Task Group Commander to maneuver his force through narrow, imperfectly charted waters at high speed during poor visibility. Lieutenant Olsen as Radar Evaluator during the engagement continuously supplied accurate data which enabled the Task Group Commander to place the Division in a firing position for a devastating torpedo attack, and who further supplied accurate data for the torpedo control and gun director parties of the U.S.S. DUNLAP, resulting in great destruction to the enemy ships. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander Albert Royal Olsen (NSN: 0-81348), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. HUTCHINS (DD-476), in Western Pacific Waters from 26 March 1945 to 31 May 1945. By his initiative, perseverance and outstanding ability he made his ship a keen weapon, and used it most effectively against the enemy in continuous action throughout this period. His outstanding service and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant Commander Olsen is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
