The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Richard Eugene Nichols (NSN: 0-73393), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving on board a United States Submarine during six War Patrols of that vessel against enemy Japanese forces in alien waters. Serving as Diving Officer during the first two hazardous missions, Commander Nichols calmly maintained skillful diving control of his ship throughout vigorous torpedo approaches and the severe countermeasures which followed, rendering invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in avoiding possible destruction of his submarine. By his sound advice and superior technical knowledge as Executive Officer and Assistant Approach Officer during the remaining war patrols, he materially assisted in fighting his vessel with forceful determination despite the strain of prolonged underwater operations and contributed to the sinking and damaging of an important amount of Japanese shipping. Commander Nichols’ inspiring leadership and resolute devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
