The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Norman Clarke Nash (NSN: 0-111648), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Plotting Officer in the U.S.S. TUNNY (SS-282) during the FIFTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 27 February 1944 to 11 April 1944. His skill and ability in furnishing his Commanding Officer with a continual flow of valuable information during approaches and attacks against enemy shipping contributed directly to his vessel’s success in sinking an enemy I-Class submarine of 2,100 tons; and damaging a MUSASHI Class Battleship of 42,000 tons, two medium class freighters totaling 18,000 tons, and a destroyer escort of 1,215 tons. His efficiency and coolness during severe enemy countermeasures greatly assisted his ship in conducting successful evasive tactics. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
