The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Waller Clarke Moore, Jr. (NSN: 0-82669), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Section Leader of Escort Scouting Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN (VS-27), attached to the U.S.S. SUWANNEE (CVE-27), during the assault on and occupation of French Morocco, 8 – 11 November 1942. Despite dangerous and persistent enemy fire, Lieutenant Moore, on 8 November, led a section of planes in vigorous glide-bombing attacks on anti-aircraft batteries and coastal defense guns at Table d’Aukasha and later scored one hit and three near misses on a hostile destroyer in Casablanca Harbor. His inspiring leadership, excellent flying skill, and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
