The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Harry Grimshaw Moore (NSN: 0-71663), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. KIDD (DD-661) in action against the enemy in the Western Pacific on 11 April 1945. While his destroyer was attached to the Radar Picket Unit protecting a larger Task Group the pickets were attacked by numerous enemy suicide planes. His ship assisted in shooting down several of these planes and was then hit and heavily damaged by a suicide plane, which killed and injured a large number of officers and men. Although badly burned and otherwise painfully injured he directed the control of damage and fighting of fires with such marked success that his ship was shortly enabled to proceed to the rear under her own power. His courage, determination, and devotion to duty during this trying and hazardous event were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
