The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal (Posthumously) to Rear Admiral Don Pardee Moon, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility as the Commander of Assault Force “U” in the amphibious invasion of the coast of Normandy, France, commencing on 6 June 1944. Rear Admiral Moon operated his forces during the assault period of the invasion against enemy opposition, and successfully landed the VII Corps, United States Army, on the selected beaches in the Madeleine area.
