The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander Alan Robert Montgomery (NSN: 0-61460), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander of a group of LCI’s on 20 October 1944, during an amphibious landing on an enemy-held objective. By cool and capable skill and leadership, and in the face of enemy mortar fire which caused numerous casualties, he conducted his LCI Gunboats to within two hundred yards of the enemy held beach while laying a devastating mortar and rocket gunfire barrage on enemy defenses. His destruction of these enemy defenses was so effective that at the subsequent landing of our own troops was successfully made with a minimum of losses. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Commander Montgomery is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
