The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Wallace Joseph Miller, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding serve as the Commander of a Destroyer Screen assigned to a Task Unit protecting the withdrawal of two severely damaged units from enemy waters during the period 13 to 17 October 1944. By his skillful handling of the destroyers assigned they were able to meet calls for rescue of personnel, screen against submarines and ably assist in the repelling of many enemy air attacks upon the Task Unit, thereby contributing greatly to the safe withdrawal of the damaged units. His courage, leadership and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
