The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Daniel Byrd Miller (NSN: 0-60455), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while acting as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. IRWIN (DD-794), during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Battle for Leyte Gulf, on 24 October 1944. Skillfully maneuvering his ship while engaged in salvage and rescue operations, Commander Miller courageously placed the IRWIN close aboard the U.S.S. PRINCETON despite repeated explosions on the carrier and severe enemy air attacks, skillfully assisting in fire control and rescue activity. His outstanding ability, inspiring leadership and courageous devotion to the fulfillment of a hazardous mission reflect the highest credit upon Commander Miller and the United States Naval Service.
