The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain Christopher Chaffe Miller (NSN: 17071), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. MOBILE (CL-63), in operations against the enemy during the period 22 July to 26 December 1944. During this period he led his ship in the Marianas, Western Carolines, Leyte, and Luzon operations, participating in many air and surface actions. His ship is credited with destruction of one light carrier, one light cruiser, one light cruiser or destroyer, one cargo vessel, one submarine, and six aircraft. His inspiring leadership consistently maintained the fighting efficiency of his ship at a high peak and made possible an outstanding record of destruction wreaked upon the enemy. His courageous, inspiring leadership and professional skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
