The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade John Middleton, Jr. (NSN: 0-176803), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron NINETEEN (VT-19), attached to the U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16), during action against major units of the Japanese Fleet in the Battle for Leyte Gulf on 24 October 1944. When powerful elements of the Japanese Navy steamed through the San Bernardino Strait preparatory to launching an attack against our task force, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Middleton promptly maneuvered to attack position and, diving through a shattering hail of anti-aircraft fire sent up from all ships in the convoy, released his bomb load at perilously low altitude to score a direct hit on a Japanese cruiser. By his superb airmanship, daring tactics and cool courage, maintained in the face of tremendous odds, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Middleton contributed materially to the infliction of extensive and costly damage on several hostile men-o’-war in this decisive battle and his zealous devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
