The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain Robert Devore McWethy (NSN: 0-123488/1100), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from April 1965 to April 1968 while serving as Commander Oceanographic System Atlantic. Displaying outstanding leadership, management ability, and resourcefulness, Captain McWethy successfully directed the widespread operations of the Atlantic Oceanographic System during a period of considerable growth and improvement. Through his exceptional planning and application of a comprehensive technical knowledge, Captain McWethy was responsible for greatly improved classified oceanographic systems and techniques of great importance to the security of the United States. As an international representative of the United States Navy, Captain McWethy’s exceptional tact and diplomacy in coordinating sensitive matters with foreign governments greatly enhanced relationships between these countries and the United States. By his outstanding accomplishments and inspiring devotion to duty, Captain McWethy upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
