The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Michael A. McLaughlin, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity on 24 August 1942 while serving aboard the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE (CV-6) in the Solomon Islands. Despite serous injury from bomb fragments which blinded him in one eye, he administered treatment to other personnel until he became so weak and exhausted that he was ordered to discontinue his efforts. His skillful performance of duty in the face of acute pain and waning strength greatly alleviated the suffering and discomfort of his shipmates and reduced the tremendous burden placed upon his shipmates. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
