The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Electronics Technician (Submarines) Jason M. “JJ” Price, United States Navy, for heroism while serving at Commander, Submarine Force, Norfolk, Virginia on 20 September 2007. While driving on Interstate 64, Chief Price witnessed a collision involving a small sedan and a dump truck. The sedan’s 80-year-old driver had become trapped in his vehicle, pinned by the dashboard and steering wheel, with severe injuries to his chest and legs. Spectators gathered at the scene, but due to the condition of the vehicle and visible engine fire, no one other than Chief Price offered assistance to the trapped victim. Even as the heat from the flames began to burn his clothes, he stayed with the victim and continued his struggle to free the man from the burning vehicle. After several attempts, and with a final burst of strength, Chief Price was able to free the victim and carry him to a safe distance within moments of the front of the vehicle being engulfed in flames. He heroically and single-handedly saved the victim from certain death while ignoring his own personal safety. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Chief Price prevented the loss of life, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
