    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] James Preston Marion, Jr., United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Torpedo Data Computer Operator of the U.S.S. COBIA (SS-245), during the FIRST War Patrol of that Submarine from 26 June to 14 August 1944. Displaying a thorough understanding of fire control equipment and skilled in operating the Torpedo Data Computer, Lieutenant Commander Marion rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting highly successful attacks against heavily escorted enemy convoys. By his cool courage and outstanding skill, he contributed materially to the success of the COBIA in sinking eight enemy ships and in evading severe hostile countermeasures. His unwavering devotion to duty throughout this hazardous patrol reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Commander Marion and the United States Naval Service.
