The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Edward Peter Madley, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in the line of his profession as Assistant Approach Officer of a United States Submarine during a War Patrol in enemy controlled waters during World War II. His performance of duty, excellent judgment, and resourcefulness were of great assistance to the Commanding Officer during attacks which resulted in sinking over 10,000 tons and damaging over 35,000 tons of enemy shipping. His conduct throughout this patrol was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
