The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander George Bernard Madden (NSN: 0-70203), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving on board a destroyer-transport which was badly damaged during the engagement with Japanese forces in the British Solomon Islands Area, 30 August 1942. When the ship, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Madden, was attacked on a black night of poor visibility by a far superior force of Japanese, despite his knowledge of the limitations of his ship’s fire power and reduction of armament, he fought with great courage and determination, inflicting damage upon the enemy. In the face of almost overwhelming power of the enemy, Lieutenant Commander Madden brought much credit to his country and demonstrated a splendid example of fortitude and leadership. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
