The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Harold A. Lundstrom, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action against numerically superior Japanese forces while serving as a Medical Corpsman attached to the FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing on Bougainville, 29 November 1943. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Lundstrom exposed himself to continuous fire, during 14 hours of fighting, to aid and remove wounded comrades to a safer area. He undoubtedly saved the lives of many who otherwise would have perished. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
