The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Wallace Eugene Lord, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Medical Corpsman attached to Company H, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 22 February 1945. When his company came under accurate artillery, mortar and small arms fire from the front and right flank during an advance in the attack against a strong enemy force stubbornly defending from commanding ground. Corpsman Lord made his way through the fierce fire and, moving from man to man, administered first aid. Although the casualties suffered by his company were many and all men near him were pinned down, he dragged to safety more than twenty-five wounded men until wounded himself. By his cool courage and unselfishness, he undoubtedly saved the lives of many men, and his loyal devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
