The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain Elbert Crawford Lindon (NSN: 0-82791), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from 28 June 1965 to 27 November 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer, Naval Station, Charleston, South Carolina. Displaying outstanding leadership, planning and management ability, and resourcefulness, Captain Lindon successfully supervised and coordinated Naval Station activities and provided exceptional support to seven major Fleet commands. Through effective management procedures, enhanced working conditions, and expanded recreational facilities for the area, Captain Lindon was instrumental in improving the morale of personnel. He contributed directly to the success of ceremonies and training exercises, to the completion of a major salvage operation, and to the outstanding services provided to Fleet operating forces and foreign ships visiting the area. Through his exceptional cooperation with local civic authorities, Captain Lindon greatly enhanced the relationships between the Naval Station and the civilian community. By his outstanding performance and inspiring devotion to duty, Captain Lindon upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
