The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain Stanley Leith (NSN: 0-58093), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Amphibious Forces, United States Pacific Fleet, during operations against enemy Japanese forces from November 1944 to May 1945. During this period, Captain Leith ably assisted in the planning and participated in the capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Charged with directing operations for counteracting enemy action at the objective, and for rescuing personnel from damaged and sunken ships, he discharged his responsibilities with professional skill and courage despite fierce and determined resistance and heavy hostile aerial attack. His forceful leadership, capable direction and devotion to duty throughout these hazardous campaigns reflect the highest credit upon Captain Leith and the United States Naval Service.
